Weather-related update

This thing is going down rain or shine. I, personally believe it will be shining as the best chance for rain after noon is %40 (and dropping 10% by the hour). We do have indoor facilities and can postpone the start by an hour if we have to. Nevertheless, we'll be celebrating somethign tomorrow. Hope to see you there.

Alley-Cat

Following the festivities we will be holding an alley-cat. This urban, open-course ride will consist of 13 checkpoints, the path to which will be at your discretion. A Baily Works Super-Pro bag will be awarded to the first rider to reach all points and return, with manifest, to the after-party at Neil's (both men's and women's categories).

Invitation

Dear Friends and Cyclists,

In June of 2002, Revolutions Community Bicycle Shop opened it’s doors in the basement of First Congregational United Church of Christ at 1000 South Cooper St. The vision was dangerously simple: We intended to save the world one bike at a time. So we created a space where people could rehabilitate and recycle bicycles with the mission of providing all Memphians—particularly the working poor of Memphis—with bicycles and the means to repair them.

Five years later we believe that, in a real way, we are achieving these goals. We have recycled and rehabilitated more than a thousand bikes. We have taught hundreds how to construct and maintain their bikes. We have given hundreds of children access to the freedom that only bikes can bestow. We have provided bikes that improved the financial circumstances of those who constructed them and ride them. Most importantly, we have strengthened the community of cyclists in Memphis by swelling its ranks and giving purpose to some of its members.

Now, we want to celebrate. We want to celebrate the community’s support of Revolutions over these past five years, and we want to show off the strength and vitality of this burgeoning bicycling community. On April 14, 2007, Revolutions will be holding its Fifth Anniversary Celebration by hosting a Cycle Swap and Bike Fair. From noon to 8 p.m. we will provide a space for Memphis’ community of cyclists to gather and celebrate. The Celebration will consist of:

• A Cycle Swap Meet: Individuals or groups can rent a booth for $10 to sell and/or trade cycling materials. We want to encourage the circulation and continued use of bike components in Memphis (free entry to buyers)

• A Bike Corral: For $3 Individuals can showcase and sell a bicycle from the Bike Corral. Purchase of booth space is not required sell a bike in the Corral

• Shop tours and Repair Tutorials: Mechanical Apprentices will provide tours of the bike shop and offer tutorials on repairing flat tires and finding a bike that fits

• A Raffle: Prizes from Memphis’ many great bike shops

• A Bike Giveaway: Raffled bicycles for neighborhood kids,

• Live Music all day long: Local artists including Dan Montgomery, The Soul Enforcers and more

• A Bike Parking Garage: A secure place to park your bike while you enjoy the festivities

After the festivities, enjoy a post-celebration Alley-cat with after-party and prizes.

All proceeds from the Fifth Anniversary Celebration, Cycle Swap and Bike Fair will go to Revolutions Community Bicycle Shop. You are the people who have helped get Revolutions to where it is today. By using us as a place to build a bike, you have created a community. By purchasing a membership you have supported our many programs and helped us serve those without any means of their own. By donating bikes, parts and your time you have helped to put bikes and mechanical skills in the hands of thousands who otherwise would have neither. We invite you to join us for this Celebration. Please come and ride your Revolutions bike. Come see where the shop is now and hear about where we want to take it. Come meet with friends and neighbors and enjoy the music and the company of the Revolutions Community. The event is free to attend and enjoy.

Thank you for your time and interest – we look forward to seeing you there. Remember to ride your bike!

Best,
Anthony Siracusa and Isaiah Flowers,

Revolutions Anniversary Celebration

Planning Statement

The Revolutions Community Bike shop proposes to hold a Memphis area Cycle-specific swap meet in conjunction with its fifth anniversary celebration. This event seeks to provide a space in which individuals, cycling groups and cycling businesses may sell and trade bicycles, bike components and accessories in a community-generating atmosphere. The primary focus of the event will the active recycling of used bicycles and bicycle parts by placing them in the hands of individuals who will return them to use. The secondary focus of the event will be one of raising consciousness about the community of cyclists that exists in Memphis. By providing a space for cyclists to congregate and support one another Revolutions hopes to strengthen the internal and external awareness of the community.
The third focus of the event is to raise funds and awareness for the Revolutions Community Bicycle Shop. Funds will be raised through a $20 rental fee for spaces within the swap from which individuals and groups may sell bicycle paraphernalia. Additional funds may be raised in the course of Revolutions standard partnership model which will presumably receive greater exposure through the concentration of participants in the Event. The event will strengthen Revolutions’ connection to the Memphis cycling and the consciousness of the Memphis cycling community.
